Ready, Set, Remote: Lessons Learned from a Year of Virtual Library Instruction

Near the beginning of the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic in March 2020, many libraries closed their physical buildings and suspended in-person services, necessitating a dynamic shift in library instruction services. For academic libraries, this shift resulted in new or expanded virtual presences, including virtual conferencing technologies (such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams) and asynchronous learning objects (such as videos and resource guides), to meet the changing needs of remote patrons. This roundtable discussion invites instruction librarians to share, reflect, and discuss their successes, challenges, and opportunities in remote instruction, and what services may be continued post-pandemic. This roundtable is facilitated by academic instruction librarians Robert Powers (Access and Learning Services Librarian, Rockhurst University, Kansas City, MO) and Peter Johnson (Access Services and Resource Librarian, William Jewell College, Liberty, MO).
